There will be no weekly homework this week.

We started our spelling program this week.  Every student in the room has a personalized spelling list, based on the words they got wrong through a series of diagnostic spelling tests.  Each Monday, students will choose any 5 words from their individual spelling lists to put in their agenda.  They will also copy 3 words of the week (usually related to units of study in the class) and add them to their agenda--giving them a total of 8 spelling words each week.  We are learning different ways to practice spelling words at school.  Feel free to practice at home too.  Each Friday the students will have a spelling test for their 8 words.  Since everyone in the class has different words, students are paired up and they dictate the words to each other.  Students need to be successful with each word on 2 separate spelling tests, so that means they will have the same spelling work more than once.  They can decide to pick the same words two weeks in a row, or take a break and pick new words the next week.  This helps the students remember the correct spelling beyond the test and apply it in their every day writing.  It is a wonderful program because it reaches each student at their level.

This week we are finishing our first number sense unit.  We have been talking about ordinal numbers and reviewing place value.  Our next unit will be a data management unit.

In social studies the students are working with partners to make a collage of either a rural or urban community.  Later this week, the students will choose 5 pictures from their collage and explain how they know it shows the kind of community they selected.  Here are a few samples.




In language we have been looking at samples of student writing from the class.  Using the success criteria for recount writing, we have been giving feedback.  A star is what the student is doing well.  An arrow is a wish or next step for next time.  This week the students are writing a final recount using feedback and the success criteria.
